The harbour at Cairnbulg was initially constructed in the 1920’s as a single pier on the seaward side of the present configuration. The land for the project was donated by the then land owner, Sir John Duthie for the fishermen of the area to have a safe haven for their fishing activities. However funds ran out before they could build the finished project.

This remained the status quo until the 1980’s when a new committee was formed and under the stewardship of Andrew May (Sonnie’s Andra) the existing pier was extended and a West pier was constructed to give the basic shape seen today which could berth 16 to 20 boats under tidal conditions. This was funded by a SDA grant.

As time progressed and the need for additional berths became evident moves were undertaken to have the present structure modernised. The Committee secured Scottish Charity status which eventually lead to Lottery, LEADER  funding to develop the facility by deepening the basin and installing a pontoon system which would add 20 more berths. The completed project can be seen in the below photograph.
